1975: Alf Curtis begins with two employees — Alf, and his wife, June Curtis. During the first year of operations, it expands to include two new employees, including Alf's son, Larry Curtis.
The business initially begins as a supply and installation company of aluminum products such as sidings, soffits, eavestroughs, storm doors, storm windows, awnings and railings. Alf already had 16 years of experience in the installation of these products before forming his own company.
1978: Alf begins to inventory popular Supply & Install products he was already using to be more cost effective, realizing there is a problem with high costs of picking up product he needs from Toronto. He begins to stock soffit, fascia, and eavestroughs. When installers in the area hear about Alf stocking inventory, they begin calling, wondering if they can purchase some materials for their own jobs.
1980: Alf Curtis starts retail operations. With the success of keeping inventory for himself and contractors, Alf built a warehouse in the garage at his own residence to allow him to inventory the products in the quantity needed to support this new retail endeavour.
The business employs approximately 10 people. Over the next six years, the retail and installation aspects of the business expand to outgrow their location at Alf's residence.
1986: In 1986, Alf purchases 1.3 acres of land with two buildings on Parkhill Road East, Peterborough, and begins a big move. The business moves from Alf's home to its current location.
The business continues to grow and strengthen with a combination of leadership, competitive pricing and excellent customer service for contractors.
1994: Alf's thoughts turn to the possibility of expanding the store to stock a full line of building materials (lumber, shingles, drywall, etc.) Alf looks for ways to grow the business, and because there are no other building supply businesses in the northeast end of Peterborough, he delves into the viable plan.
1995: In January of 1995, Alf Curtis Home Improvements joins the Castle Building Centres Group. Castle Building Centres is a group of 250 independent building supply dealers from across Canada who combine their purchasing power to negotiate better services and prices from manufacturers and wholesalers. This in turn allows all members to sell and serve their customers better and more competitively in the marketplace.
2005: Alf Curtis Home Improvements expands operations to serve Lindsay, Ontario. This location offers the same experience, service and quality of products Alf Curtis customers have come to expect. The Lindsay location is a 4-1/2 acre site with 25,000 sq.ft. of warehouse space, 1,400 sq.ft. store and over a 3-1/2 acre storage yard.
2014: In May, Alf Curtis Home Improvements has a Grand Opening celebration for its newly renovated Peterborough flagship showroom, warehouse and retail store. The store spans 3,200 sq ft.
2017: Alf Curtis Home Improvements opens a new lumber yard and retail store in Belleville (Quinte West) and celebrates with a huge Grand Opening.
Currently, Alf Curtis Home Improvements employs 60-70 people across its three locations. Alf's grandson, Brent Perry, who grew up in the business and has played an active role since 1985, directs his efforts towards managing the building supplies, contractor sales and purchasing side of the business.
The present Peterborough facility has grown over 18 acres, encompassing a 3,200 sq.ft. showroom, 42,000 sq.ft of enclosed warehousing, and a 17-acre yard. Alf Curtis Home Improvements also has a fleet of different delivery vehicles to meet all types of delivery needs, including three boom trucks, capable of lifting three tons up to 70 feet in the air, allowing crews to ensure proper placement and protection of materials at a job site.
Alf Curtis Home Improvements also has a "Trough Truck" that goes on-site to make 5" seamless eavestroughs. Whatever the length of a house or building, from one to 500 feet long, our team can extrude the eavestrough in one piece so there are no seams and no leakage.
The experienced staff at our contractor sales desks are always available to give you a very competitive quote on all your building material needs and to answer your questions. Alf continues to be a very active member in the business. The family continues to look for opportunities to improve customer service, product selections and the business as a whole. We have always built our business on quality products, workmanship and service, and this will not change as we move forward. Our goal is not to be the largest in the area, but to be the best at what we do. That means offering quality products and selection, second-to-none service, and having the knowledge to help our customers with all their questions and problems.
